Fat, ¥160 pillars of incense stood taller than me next to black metal stalls covered in red candle wax. Since June 1, Sanders has spoken to 100,000 people across seven events. In Phoenix, Arizona, on July 18, he drew 11,000 people, setting a new record for 2016 presidential candidates.

Some Things Considered, Mostly by White Men
A new FAIR study finds that NPR commentary is dominated by white men and almost never directly addresses political issues. This study reviewed transcripts from January 1 to May 31, 2015, looking at regular commentators—that is, voices who were featured twice or more on Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Weekend Edition Saturday and Weekend Edition Sunday to present their perspective in monologue form.

China to ban foreign online content publication
Only 100% China-owned businesses will be able to publish online content. Foreign companies already must get approval, or are flat-out banned. The Chinese government announced new laws that will ban all foreign-invested companies from publishing online content, effective March 10, according to a Quartz report by Heather Timmons and Huang Zheping on Thursday.
SGA vice president of business and finance resigns
The Student Government Association’s vice president of business and finance has resigned. Junior Sandra Rojas said she was stepping down from her position Oct. 23 because her official responsibilities were undermined on several occasions. Rojas announced her resignation through a Facebook post to the Class of 2016, 2017 and 2018 pages, in which she said her colleagues have not been valuing her opinions during her time in office, and she does not feel the SGA prioritizes student organizations over its own politics.

Chemicals dumped in sewer damage wastewater treatment facility
A spill of unknown chemicals on Nov. 23 caused a temporary shutdown of the Ithaca Area Water Treatment Plant. The largest dumping of unknown chemicals into the City of Ithaca’s public sanitary sewer system in recent memory occurred Nov. 23, forcing the Ithaca Area Waste Water Treatment Facility to shut down from Nov. 25–27.

Ithaca College judicial referrals related to alcohol decrease
Judicial referrals related to alcohol violations on campus have decreased from 870 in 2010 to 342 in 2014, a decrease of 60.7 percent, according to the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report released by the Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management. Campus officials offered a number of reasons for why the number of violations has decreased so substantially, attributing it to AlcoholEdu, the Medical Amnesty Policy and a decrease in student drinking.

The problem with media’s coverage of the Chinese stock market crash. The Chinese stock market crash over the summer was big financial news, but its severe impact on Chinese families was largely overlooked by Western news. The crash began as an investment bubble. Large numbers of Chinese small business owners put their business onto the stock market, creating a glut of investment options, according to a Reuters article from July 8.

Mackenzie Gannon '17 shares information about her new club for food allergy awareness with Rachel Huley '17 and Bob Haskell '15 at the student organization fair Sept. 3. Sophomore Mackenzie Gannon has lived her whole life with a life-threatening allergy to dairy and eggs. If Gannon touches dairy or eggs, or even just dairy or egg residue, she will break out into hives.

Michael Tkaczevski, class of 2016, is studying Journalism and International Politics at Ithaca College.

He has provided writing and research for Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting (FAIR), a news media watchdog, and been a staff writer and assistant news editor for The Ithacan, Ithaca College's award-winning independent student print and online newspaper.

He is interested in investigative news and U.S. and international politics. He has studied abroad in Kunming, China, where he studied environmental politics in China and Southeast Asia, and has spent three years learning Mandarin Chinese.

At the end of the 2012-'13 academic year, Michael and his colleague Jeremy Li earned The Ithacan's News Story of the Year Award for the "On Course For China" investigative series.

Michael has been a member of the Society of Professional Journalists since 2012.
